PRESS RELEASE: Britain complicit in rendition of female British resident to Somalia and Ethiopia and in the torture of British citizens in Bangladesh

Umm Dawud, a female British resident was rendered from Kenya to Somalia and then eventually on to Ethiopia with the complicity of the British security agencies in 2007. A testimony taken by Cageprisoners of her experience highlights the way in which she was treated and the interview conducted by MI5. Her claims are given legitimacy through similar claims by British citizens who were subjected to the same treated during the same period.

According to Umm Dawud,

“A female agent came to question me, and although I do not remember her name, she specifically introduced herself as being from MI5. She was interested in the men, if I knew the men, if I knew what was going on, about my husband.”

The full testimony can be view here.

The case study of Umm Dawud has been included as part of the revised report released today by Cageprisoners, Fabricating Terrorism III: British complicity in renditions and torture – which details the case studies of 31 British citizens and residents who have been subjected to rendition and torture with the complicity of the British government. This report will be submitted to Sir Peter Gibson who is heading the inquiry into allegations of British complicity in torture and rendition.

Fresh details are also included in the case of Jamil-ur-Rehman, a British citizen detained in Bangladesh who alleges he was tortured with the complicity of MI5. The report provides direct testimony from Rehman’s account detailing the way in which he was treated,

“I look at Colonel Saiful’s face and he was fuming with anger. Both Liam and Andrew laughed after I spoke and Andrew said, “They haven’t done a very good job on you have they”, I was gob-smacked, I thought what is he saying, so he knows what is happening to me, but he is doing nothing about it even though I am a British citizen, my head started spinning, I felt a little dizzy.

Liam then said, “Colonel Saiful I believe you need a 10 minute break now”.”

Cageprisoners Director Moazzam Begg said:

“Complicity in torture and abuse goes far beyond the Guantanamo cases – it is something endemic to British policies in the Blair era and perhaps even beyond. The time has now come for all those in authority who colluded in torture to face their past.”

Cageprisoners spokesmen will be available for comment on the report and cases.
